Book: The Pemberley Chronicles, A companion Volume to Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice

Browsing through my local Chapters store, I bumped into my favourite store rep. We got to talking about favourite books. Of course Jane Austen was high on both of our lists.

She asked if I had heard of Rebecca Ann Collins.

I bought “The Pemberley Chronicles: A Companion Volume to Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice” the first book of ten and was delighted with it.  It is entirely refreshing. Written with the same sensibilities as the original, the story of Darcy and Elizabeth continues from after their wedding. I liked it so much that not having finished the first book, I returned to the store and bought the second.

If you loved Pride and Prejudice you will definitely enjoy these books. The dialogue is light in comparison to Austen but who can write dialogue like that.

Ms. Collins has captured the essential quality of Jane Austen’s writing and continues the tale with the daily concerns of a young couple who are very much in love. Ms. Collins has added a little of the flavour of Elizabeth Gaskell. Another of my favourite authors who wrote similar novels to Jane Austen, but with more social and political issues of the day.

I hope if you have never had the good fortune to read

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

that you will.  It is not a large and grand story, more a small room

gentle exploration of first impressions and misunderstandings.
