WIP Wed: The Siren call of the sewing room and Surgery

tami_wip

Yes I am trying to ignore the siren call of the sewing room. After the great success of The Dress, I have a Jacket pattern and another dress pattern with fabric and notions, quietly whispering to me from the sewing room.

Thinking McCalls "D the white one", New Look "A" the white one, and Butterick "B" the striped one. We'll see...

Meanwhile Willow has been put on a die-et. She is not very happy about it. She sits and stares at me, looking sad and flabby.

Ok nothing done on this.

The morning started with my DS going to the fracture Clinic for a follow up, At most 2 hours. 14 hrs later, after surgery to tie the 4 pcs of bone back together, a titanium clavicle the whole day was gone. He was a real trooper. I left my knitting at home, but thank goodness for Kobo ereaders.  He is home tucked up in bed, probably very uncomfortable for about a week. So this project will have to wait till next week.

FO Friday: A Life Lesson on Determination

FOfriday

A Life Lesson: Determination

It’s been a hectic week, beginning with a wedding, ending with my DS determined to go for training  for his new job with a broken clavicle. He said that “they are paying me to train to do this job, I have to go“. This was two days after he got the job. Note that he broke his collar bone on the way home on the first day after orientation, on the third day he was back at work. He had been at work for an hour and surprised this trainer by making a sale and making a commission. He was exhausted and hurting when he got home, and very happy he went. I am so proud of that stubborn determination, that at times has made me pull my hair out.

I am still working on The Plan, beginning round 3, even though I am really want to start something new.

I am determined to get down to 6 wips before I start anything else!

WIP Wed: Wedding, The Plan and Broken Bones!

FOfridayThe Wedding! I wish my dear cousin is as happy in her marriage as my husband and I have been over the years! Congratulations to the Happy couple!

Congratulations Debbie and Ryan

Congratulations Debbie and Ryan

Well the plan continues.

I started out with 14 wips, have finished 4, 10 more to go.

As round 2 comes to an end, I have to observe that it has been enlightening. I get up each morning and look at the list and see what the day will bring. This has imposed some discipline on my knitting. I have decided to limit my wip list to no more than 7, this is up for some adjustment…

  1. Carry along project
  2. socks
  3. shawl
  4. larger project
  5. sweater
  6. a gift
  7. something for the Bazaar.

So I have an excuse. This one got no customer attention. I planned to do some in the car on the way to the wedding, and then forgot it at home!

Thought things would calm down for a while…

Good news my DS finally found a job! Hurray!

Ok, DS got to Toronto on bus and then train, got orientated at the new job, and came home on the train… then it went all pear-shaped! Running for bus, he tripped and broke his right clavicle, proceeded home on bus. Major pain, checked him over and the right side felt mushy. His mother frog marched him to emerg. He is now sporting a stylish blue harness for a month. He has training for the next 3 days! Three more trips!

See, no over reactions here, as his a mother I have reasons for worry!

My furry children are fine!

FO Friday & Sewing: Needed a Dress for 2 weddings

Looking for clothes for “fluffy” people… The Bay has a whole section, but nothing for me. Julie’s is sporting some amazing (and not in a good way) lounge singer wear if you are working in Vegas!
It took 10 stores for me to through in the towel! All the places that sold fluffy wear, had nothing classic or simple, most were loud geometric, or with giant flowers, black, white, strapless, sundresses and jersey.

I am thinking I could do an awesome business designing and manufacturing tasteful plus size clothing out of nonknitwear  fabrics…

Plan B: Have pattern, Fabricland, sewing machine, 1/4 of what I was willing to spend and a dress for each wedding that fits. Pattern evaluation and any alterations tomorrow, Bodice dry run and test fit Monday, Tuesday cut out and serge, Wednesday sew, Thursday sew, Friday hem… Saturday wear, hopefully.

Saturday Step 1: Decide what to make

The blue linen is for the first wedding. The complementary fabric might be a jacket or another dress, we'll see...

The complementary fabric might be a jacket or another dress, we’ll see…

Sunday Step 2: Pattern alterations and improvements

Favourite old trick, use comfy older dress as a model for alterations. This pattern asks for fully lined. I am adding a 1 pc yoke facing for the neck and arm holes.

Favourite old trick, use comfy older dress as a model for alterations. This pattern asks for fully lined. I am adding a 3 pc yoke facing for the neck shoulders and arm holes.

This pattern is lined, but no neck shoulder and armhole facings. Some pattern drafting required… dust off my tailoring skills, tissue paper and drafting tools, what fun! Voila, Ghost Facing!

A few years a go friend and I took a Tailoring Diploma together. I really enjoy pattern drafting, I should do this more often.

Monday Step 3: Cut out Lining ant test fit, finish cutting

?????????????????

Found everything I need to get on with it, except the cutting table! Things have been piling up in my studio. I can’t even see it from the door. Good news, found the cutting table, tools and sewing machine under the mountain… the bad news, my serger is MIA. Todayz mission accomplished, once I tossed everything out of the studio and got out the rotary cutter, mats, ran out to get some pins, and got organized. Everything went smoothly 🙂 Lol what fun! My upstairs hall is a minefield, but I don’t care!  Ignore complaints is my motto!

In the evening my hero found the serger! He also sorted the storage room and looked after the hall, so all set for tomorrow :0)

Tuesday Step 4: Serge

I am really enjoying working with this fabric, and I forgot how much fun using my serger was.

Tutorial: Serger tension tips

Wednesday Step 5:  Sew – Lined Neckline and Armhole  with Ghost facing, and Invisible Zipper.

Ghost Facing, it lays inside the dress, not attached to the lining. Use this method when fabric is light and the facing would otherwise show through as a ridge on the surface of the fabric. I needed to face this as the neckline and armhole required stabilizing.

Ok Huston we had a problem. Dry fit front of dress, lining and facing. Shoulder seam and neckline adjustment needed. Major reworking of underarm and side seams:0)

Everything done but the hem :0)

Note I am not showing the hem, I am disgusted could not get it straight, thought me or the pattern… turns out that my Judy has a list… called it a day. Something to do tomorrow. My awesome, sweetheart has offered to crawl on the floor with a ruler. That’s just one of the things I adore about him :0)

FOfriday

The  plan, going well so far, 6 days, 6 projects got attention. Some are so close to finished.  I am using self-discipline, I stop work where ever I am in the pattern, at midnight, and will not pick it up again till it comes up again in the rotation. It’s a pain but I feel it will be more rewarding next time I take it up :0)

So here we go again…
